The Tobin Family Story

Toby Tobin was born and raised in Kansas City. Toby’s Grandfather and later his Father owned and operated Tobin Seed Company, a wholesale distributor to nurseries.

Toby’s Father, Jack, began hosting a weekday radio show in the early days of radio in Kansas City on WDAF-610am. Jack Tobin also hosted a television show on WDAF-TV and developed a reputation as an honest and trusted individual in the lawn and garden industry.

Toby says, “My Dad started having me fill in with him on Fridays on the radio show and we did pretty well together. He was also an avid fisherman so whenever he decided it was a great day to fish, I’d get a call the night before and be told that I would be doing the show the next day. I guess you could say I learned the radio business by trial and error!”

Toby worked for several nursery companies in Kansas City until 1978 when he and his Brother, Mark Tobin, formed Tobin Lawn & Landscape. The company soon blossomed and now serves thousands of home in the greater Kansas City area providing lawn and landscape services.

In 1982 Jack Tobin passed on the full-time reins of his successful radio show to Toby and he’s been going strong ever since. Toby moved the show to Saturday mornings on KMBZ-AM over 33 years ago and can be heard from 6am to 10am on News Radio KMBZ 98.1 FM every week. Toby’s wife EJ is there with thin every week and fields calls from listeners. Toby and EJ spend a lot of their spare time working on their lawn. traveling and relaxing.

It’s rare that a weekend goes by that Toby is not at the show, but when he does decide to take a break his brother Mark can be heard filling in. Mark is also a successful co-host of the America Outdoorsman Hunting and Fishing show and still operates Tobin Lawn & Landscape/

Mark says, “After all these years of working with my Brother the one thing I can tell you about him is he is the exact same person you hear on the radio show every week. He genuinely cares about people and loves what he does. He and EJ are best friends and the two truly enjoy every aspect of life”.
